1st Hole 326 yards Par 4

The tilt of the ground is to the left here, there is an out of bounds to the right of the fairway, but as long as we can hold our drive up we should have little difficulty finding the green with our second shot, taking care to avoid two sand bunkers guarding the green.

2nd Hole 180 yards Par 3

Dont be fooled by the apparent simplicity of this hole, with bushes to the right and trees to the left we need a positive iron to the green, avoiding the bunker to the left of the green.

3rd Hole 373 yards Par 4

Here is a hole where the bold, confident shot is rewarded, and the golfer who lifts their head duly punished. We drive over the apex of a hedgerow and the hole is dog-legged to the right. A well placed drive will leave a good second, over a cross bunker to a green surrounded by grassy hillocks.

4th Hole 357 yards Par 4

Here is a genuine left hand dog leg with a large well placed bunker on the elbow. Only the longest hitters will attempt to cut the corner for heavy rough will trap all but the best shots. For most players the safer route is the better but still requires two good shots to find the green.

5th Hole 347 yards Par 4

This is an interesting hole with a long curving dog to the left, which poses the problem of deciding just how much of the corner one can cut off. A long well placed drive will leave a reasonable pitch shot to a built up green with bunkers on both flanks.

6th Hole 397 yards Par 4

A difficult par 4. Our two shots must be straight as well as long, for the wood which lies along the right is out of bounds, and to the left are trees. Fortunately, we drive downhill and our second shot is played up a slope to a green which also rises, near the wood. An anxious hole for slicers.

7th Hole 524 yards Par 5

This is the longest hole on the course, with no hope of assistance from the lie of the land. It is slightly dog-legged to the right and any attempt to take a short cut is inadvisable for several reasons. Best drive fairly well to the left over the wide depression, and keep leftish with our second. In that way we avoid trees, hillocks and rough to the right, and leave the well guarded armchair green open to our approach shot.

8th Hole 364 yards Par 4

Here the ground does help, but this is no easy two shotter, To pave the way for the correct figure a straight drive is essential; otherwise we maybe faced with a fiendish second, which must be played over another dip, containing a bunker, to a tightly trapped green. A slight saddle just short of the green makes it unwise to pitch and run, but a bold shot stands a good chance of finding and staying on the long rising green.

9th Hole 362 yards Par 4

No slicers paradise, this. Most of the trouble is on the right and the slope is in that direction. But if we keep the drive up, we shall be well placed for a straightforward approach to the semi-plateau green set in a left-hand slope. Best to pitch so as to run to the green than go smack for the pin. We could do with more of these tests of skill.

10th Hole 431 yards Par 4

We start the back nine with a demanding hole which requires two long shots up a gentle valley to a semi-plateau green. The slope of the fairway from left to right demands an accurate second to find the green without risk of kicking across into the right hand bunker guarding the green. A deep hollow just short of the green adds to the difficulty.

11th Hole 184 yards Par 3

Here our tee shot needs to be hit with accuracy and judgement. The hole lies uphill over semi rough ground, and the green rises slightly and has a difficult bunker to the right and a deep hole on its right hand corner.

12th Hole 524 yards Par 5

A good drive along an avenue of gorse and bushes will drop down over the brow of the hill. Beware of a slice, though, for this will leave an uncomfortable second over a group of fir tress bordering the ‘Dell’ as it is called, and is still treated as a water hazard. A good second will leave a reasonable chip to a hollow green surrounded on three sides by grassy mounds.

13th Hole 377 yards Par 4

This is a really beautiful natural hole, with a setting of woodlands and a fairway that shelves in an odd and interesting fashion. Our drive is over a gully, and in its further edge, bunkers to catch loose shots. Our second is along an avenue of trees to a two-tier green which nestles in a hollow. The 13th can be ‘card wrecker’ too.

14th Hole 139 yards Par 3

Some sort of iron is called for here dependant on the wind, and here again the shot is through an avenue in the woods. The green is of the hog back variety and is on a plateau and guarded by a gully and bunker to the front and falling ground to the right. A bad slice is bound to take to the woods.

15th Hole 424 yards Par 4

This one is dog-legged to the left and our drive must first make sure of passing between two clumps of trees none too far apart. A long second is required to a large and not fiendishly guarded green.

16th Hole 347 yards Par 4

Here is a hole that is decidedly more difficult than it appears on paper.

Our drive must carry a ditch, and the fairway with a spinney on each side is slightly dog-legged to the right. Nevertheless, we must keep well left, for a long mound bars a good approach from the right; the other way the green, on the top of a slight rise, lies open.

17th Hole 516 yards Par 5

This is a sharp left hand dog-leg with a wooded land on the inside of the elbow.

A very long hitter can cut the corner and reach the green comfortably in two, but for most of us it is three well placed shots to the green. An interesting hole to tackle with the game in the balance.

18th Hole 458 Yards Par 4

Two exceptionally good shots would be needed to steer clear of bunkers on both sides of a tightly trapped ‘home’ green in front of the Clubhouse. The ground does slope a little in the right direction but it’s a good four, and a par here will often decide a tight match
